Tutto ha inizio quando il professor Edward Lansing decide di scoprire chi ha realmente scritto un magnifico saggio su Shakespeare consegnatogli da un suo studente e viene a sapere che l’alunno l’ha comprato, pensate un po’!, da una slot machine. Przyjmując bardzo szerokie rozumienie fantastyki naukowej włączamy czasem utwory z jej pogranicza, które wydały nam się warte zaprezentowania czytelnikom.Są więc w naszym tomie tacy znani wszystkim miłośnikom fantastyki tytani, jak Ray Bradbury (ze swoją wersją duszy anielskiej więzionej w czerepie rubasznym), autor przeszło stu książek Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke, Clifford D. Simak i znacznie od nich młodszy Robert Sheckley. Udało nam się zdobyć opowiadanie Stanisława Lema, który — jak niedawno podliczono — jest najbardziej czytanym autorem SF na świecie. Jego twórczość, znana do niedawna głównie w Związku Radzieckim i europejskich krajach socjalistycznych, zaczyna być tłumaczona na Zachodzie, wywołując tam niemałą sensację.Opowiadanie Roberta Silverberga, płodnego autora amerykańskiego, który był najpoważniejszym kontrkandydatem Asimova do ostatniej nagrody Hugo, pochodzi z cyklu o miastach przyszłości — mrowiskach.Kurt Vonnegut jest specjalistą od zadawania trafiających w sedno pytań. Czyżby chcieli zachęcić wszystkich uczniów do czytania Vonneguta?B. J. Friedman, należący do czołowych autorów amerykańskich, nie był dotychczas wydawany w Polsce. Obok realistycznych powieści pisze opowiadania, w których obserwacja obyczajowa przeplata się z fantazją.Victor Contoski jest znanym amerykańskim poetą i tłumaczem polskiej poezji. Yep i Dixon reprezentują najmłodsze pokolenie pisarzy.Również wśród autorów radzieckich obok dobrze znanego czytelnikom Ilji Warszawskiego przedstawiamy dwóch autorów nowych: Wiaczesława Moroczkę i Michaiła Puchowa.Jeśli chodzi o polskich autorów, Janusz A. Zajdel ma na swoim koncie dwa tomy opowiadań fantastycznych, Andrzej Czechowski wydał przed laty jeden tomik i pisuje niestety bardzo rzadko, Krzysztof W. Malinowski zaś debiutował w ubiegłorocznym wydaniu Kroków w nieznane.Tak więc niniejszy zbiór opowiadań stanowi jakby przegląd nurtów i tendencji światowej i krajowej science — fiction od A (jak Asimov) do Z (jak Zajdel). Większość opowiadań tłumaczonych ukazuje się drukiem po raz pierwszy.
