No hay duda de que Roberto Saviano, a través de Gomorra, ha tirado de la manta para descubrir una realidad patente y todavía muy desconocida como es la delincuencia de la mafia. Su obra, más que calidad literaria, tiene valor, retrata la verdad, por muy peligroso que sea hacerlo. Ese es su mérito. Sin embargo, con Lo contrario de la muerte, al lector -o, sobre todo, al comprador del libro- le asaltan ciertas dudas. Y es que el libro está inflado en tamaño, tanto, que al final del mismo la editorial ocupa once páginas en publicar los últimos títulos de la colección. Debería haberse elegido un formato más sincero para esta publicación o bien reunir más de dos relatos para componer un conjunto más interesante que el que contiene este volumen.En lo estrictamente literario, Saviano vuelve a estremecer con dos historias cruelmente realistas. En la primera, ‘Regreso de Kabul’, narra cómo los jóvenes italianos sin futuro se enrolan en el ejército dejando atrás familia, novias y amigos. Lo que aparentemente son misiones de paz, para los soldados acaban siendo auténticas acciones bélicas aunque sólo sea por las consecuencias. Una bala perdida, un atentado o un accidente se lleva las vidas de los militares con apenas veinte años. El autor se fija en Enzo, un joven italiano destinado a Afganistán, a través del testimonio de su novia Maria. El otro texto, ‘El anillo’, es más personal, autobiográfico. En este relato Saviano recuerda su juventud, en la que conoció a la camorra y se centra en el destino de Giusseppe y su madre, claro ejemplo de la carencia de medios de la Italia pobre y condenada a pasar por el ingrato aro de la mafia.Este libro es un breve aperitivo, una pieza demasiado breve y que puede completar Gomorra para retratar la realidad de la sociedad italiana actual, la que no se conoce pero la que sufre (o hace sufrir). Lo contrario de la muerte es, tal vez, un libro que no se comprende lo suficiente en su contexto sin la lectura previa de Gomorra. Roberto Saviano sabe mucho y sabe contarlo, pero el problema de la literatura es que, cuando se cuenta la verdad, parece ficción, y cuando se novela, parece que se dice la verdad.
