Ecco un bellissimo esempio di classica distopia fantascientifica: un mondo futuro rigidamente stratificato in classi separate da un ferreo codice sociale, in cui il giudice è anche il freddo esecutore materiale delle sue sentenze. Chi ce lo propone è Algis Budrys, un veterano della fantascienza degli anni cinquanta (e questo romanzo breve appartiene al suo periodo migliore), un autore noto per alcuni suoi ottimi romanzi come Michaelmas (Progetto Terra), Incognita uomo e Rogue Moon, ma che ha prodotto anche un’incredibile quantità di bellissimi racconti ingiustamente dimenticati.

La fantascienza è l’unico genere letterario nel quale l’uomo sia direttamente e concretamente posto a confronto con l’infinito. In questo dato risiede il suo fascino principale: perchè dall’infinito emerge l'enigma, l’ignoto, l’incubo, ed il confronto si trasforma in una sfida. Questo romanzo di Algis Budrys (un autore che i lettori di «Futuro» hanno già avuto modo di apprezzare) ripropone uno dei temi più classici della narrativa fantascientifica: quello della minaccia nascosta in un mondo sconosciuto, del mistero che deve essere rivelato a rischio della vita. Il mondo che cela l’enigma, e dà corpo alla sfida, è il nostro satellite naturale: la Luna, che l’uomo ha appena sfiorata, e che cela nelle sue viscere un segreto mortale. Cosa si nasconde in fondo al labirinto dal quale nessun esploratore è mai uscito vivo? Quale intelligenza maligna ha potuto concepire una trappola cosi crudele e mostruosa? He stays in the background, however, as a journalist, albeit a highly influential & respected one whose opinions can still influence public opinion. However, as the novel progresses, he slowly learns that a possible extraterrestrial presence may be interfering with the new world he has worked so hard to create.The novel is remarkable for its prescience, because it appeared less than a decade into the Internet era, long before its current prominence & ubiquity. Its description of journalism & its professional culture are likewise highly developed, mainly due to the late Budrys' residence near Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, which appears in the book.
