Harry Thürk schrieb ein unerhört spannendes Buch. Bestechend wie kaum bei einem anderen literarischen Werk der Nachkriegszeit ist die Echtheit, mit der der Autor das Geschehen an der Front schildert. Die Gestalten dieses Romans sind der Wirklichkeit nachgezeichnet. Harry Thürk widmet das Buch seinen gefallenen Kameraden, die in dem Irrtum befangen waren, Helden zu sein, und deren Verwegenheit einer besseren Sache wert gewesen wäre.
