From the tenements to the town houses of nineteenth-century New York, midwife Sarah Brandt and Detective Sergeant Frank Malloy never waiver in their mission to aid the innocent and apprehend the guilty. Now, the latest novel in the Edgar®-nominated series finds Sarah and Malloy investigating the murder of a Knickerbocker club member who was made to pay his dues…A Gaslight MysterySarah Brandt's family is one of the oldest in New York City, and her father, Felix Decker, takes his position in society very seriously. He still refuses to resign himself to his daughter being involved with an Irish Catholic police detective. But when a member of his private club-the very exclusive Knickerbocker-is murdered, Decker forms an uneasy alliance with Detective Sergeant Frank Malloy to solve the crime as discreetly as possible.Malloy soon discovers that despite his social standing, the deceased-Chilton Devries-was no gentleman. In fact, he's left behind his own unofficial club of sorts, populated by everyone who despised him. As he and Sarah sort through the suspects, it becomes clear to her that her father is evaluating more than the detective's investigative abilities, and that, on a personal level, there is much more at stake for Malloy than discovering who revoked Devries' membership-permanently.

Murder on the Bride’s Side (Tracy Kiely Mysteries[2])
Kiely Tracy
fb2
Loosely modeled on Sense and Sensibility, Kiely's pleasing second cozy to feature Jane Austen fan Elizabeth Parker (after 2009's Murder at Longbourn) may be short on plot, but is well populated with lively characters, in particular genteel Southerners. The morning after Elizabeth's best friend's wedding in Richmond, Va., the bride's aunt turns up with a knife in her ribs. Many members of the wedding party are suspect, but when a diamond necklace is found in Elizabeth's room, the police focus their investigation on her. For reassurance, Elizabeth looks to "Elinor Dashwood's almost transcendental calm in the face of chaos." Armchair sleuths will enjoy following the clues up to the surprising dénouement. The most shocking thing in this fun, featherlight read is that these Southerners persist in calling the bride's grandmother by her first name without the courtesy of a "Miss" in front of it.

Murder On The Orient Express /

that two phony death notices

add up to deadly trouble. And

murdered. "Harry" Haristeen, in

postmistress, is the first to hear

all the theories on whodunit -

Crozet and no one seems to

know why.

The annual steeplechase races at

Montpelier, once the home of

James and Dolley Madison, are

the high point in the social

calendar of the horse-mad

Virginians of cozy Crozet. The race meet offers a cracking good

time with old friends and a

chance to get even—on the

racecourse—with old enemies.

Postmistress Mary Minor "Harry"

Haristeen will be in the thick of the action on this day of high

spirits and fierce competition.

But the glorious thoroughbreds

and the pinks and greens and

purples worn by the riders do

not blind Harry to the dangerous undercurrents that

start to surface. There's sure to

be some emotional fireworks at

Montpelier. Still, no one expects

the day to end in tragedy.

Found dead in the main barn is one of the day's riders, a knife

plunged through the jockey's

heart. The only clue is a playing

card, the Queen of Clubs,

impaled over the fatal wound.

Within the wealthy, tight-knit world of horse owners, trainers,

and jockeys, the victim had both

admirers and enemies.

Was the murderer's motive

greed, drugs--a pervasive evil in

the race world—or sexual rivalry? Luckily for Crozet's

humans, the tiger cat Mrs.

Murphy is right at home in the

stable yard...and on the trail of

the shocking truth. But will

Harry catch on in time to stop a killer grown bloodthirsty with

success?

In Murder, She Meowed Sneaky Pie Brown and her co-author,

Rita Mae Brown, have penned

another clever and sassy

mystery that probes the depths

of human depravity and the

heights of feline genius.
