Pero las descripciones están magistralmente engarzadas a la narración, sin estorbarla. Queda por debajo, en cambio, la impresión de que el verdadero asunto de estas novelettes tan bien trabadas es la monotonía de la vida en los pueblos pequeños. Y una incurable nostalgia soterrada, esa “íntima tristeza reaccionaria” de la que hablaba el mejicano López Velarde en un memorable poema. En ese sentido, estas historias pertenecen al mismo género que La calle estrecha de Pla.
