Originalidad es la única palabra que realmente puede describir esta obra. Un mundo y una cultura perfectamente creados, una cronología de ochenta mil años cuya historia es poco a poco revelada. Y no es que Los tejedores de cabellos no recuerde a otras historias de otros autores, es que su desarrollo, sus personajes y sus misterios son tratados con tal seriedad, con tal realismo, que muchos clásicos anglosajones de ciencia-ficción realmente parecen relatos adolescentes en comparación.

El Emperador, retratado como nunca antes en la ciencia-ficción, los rebeldes, los linajes de tejedores de cabellos, los mercaderes, y un sinfin más de arquetipos de la space opera son reinventados y redefinidos, insuflando vida a un género que por lo general suele ser clónico de sí mismo.

Andreas Eschbach es un gran narrador. Aunque su libro sean relatos cortos entrelazados, y aunque sus personajes sean independientes, es capaz de cerrar el círculo y hacer que su libro tenga un principio y un final bien enlazados, sin dejar puertas abiertas para explotar el filón, sin recurrir a trucos fáciles para llamar la atención del lector. Y eso se nota, se nota mucho y para bien.

Incluso podría llegarse más lejos: en su artículo, José María Faraldo considera que esta novela es un reflejo de la Alemania natal de Eschbach en su último siglo (la tiranía, la opresiva tradición, el culto al gobernante, la lucha contra el poder absoluto…), y no podría estar más de acuerdo. Aunque es ciencia-ficción, el realismo de las actitudes, de las situaciones y de los personajes nos remite a nuestra propia historia, a nuestro propio mundo real.

Y es que a uno le queda la sensación de que se ha estado perdiendo algo, y que hay toda una literatura europea de ficción por descubrir: sin secuelas interminables, sin vivir de exprimir el mismo concepto una y otra vez, con escritores que saben escribir, tejer una historia y desarrollarla con suma perfección. Pero sobre todo da la sensación de que hay escritores que aman el género, que no se conforman con releer y reescribir clásicos, y se han decidido a llevar un paso más adelante la ciencia-ficción y la fantasía.
