Andaba yo por los seis años cuando mi padre decidió que podía prestarme sus libros sin temor a destrozos. Hasta ese momento, mi biblioteca básica se restringía al TBO, Mortadelos variados, y cualquier libro de categoría infantil-juvenil que me cayera como regalo en las fechas oportunas. Por desgracia (o quizá sería más justo decir por suerte. Sólo quizá), la economía familiar no estaba para seguir el ritmo de mis `papá, que me he acabado el tebeo, cómprame otro`. A grandes males, grandes remedios, y el viejo debió de pensar que a mayor número de páginas a mi disposición le incordiaría menos a menudo (se equivocaba, pero esto es otra historia).En cualquier caso, poco tiempo después de tener carta blanca para leer cualquier cosa impresa que fuese capaz de alcanzar de las estanterías, me llamó la atención un libro cuya portada estaba dominada por el retrato de un señor de aspecto campechano bajo la palabra Papillón. Nada más. Sin tener a mano a nadie a quien preguntar de qué iba la cosa (yo estaba de vacaciones, el resto de la familia trabajando), lo cogí, me puse a hojearlo, y… De lo siguiente que me di cuenta fue de que habían pasado varias horas y me llamaban para cenar. No me había enterado. Yo estaba muy lejos. En las comisarías de la poli francesa. En un juicio. Deportado a la Guayana. Intentando salir de Barranquilla. Contando la secuencia de las olas en la Isla del Diablo para adivinar el momento adecuado para saltar y que la marea me llevase lejos sin destrozarme contra los acantilados. Dando paseos en la celda de castigo (`Un paso, dos, tres, cuatro, cinco, media vuelta. Uno, dos…`).Sería exagerado decir que entendí perfectamente todo lo que leía, problema que quedó resuelto en posteriores relecturas a lo largo de los años, pero me daba igual. Lo cierto es que fue una lectura con secuelas que llegan hasta hoy. No sólo en cuanto a influencias en el carácter, actitudes, aficiones y actividades, que las hubo, con el paso de los años también tuve mi propia ración de aventuras, con alguna que otra escapada incluida (aunque esto, también, es otra historia). Además, y más importante en cuanto al tema que nos ocupa, influyó en mi punto de vista a la hora de apreciar las lecturas.Con el tiempo he acabado leyendo de todo y aprendido a disfrutar estilos muy diversos. Y cada vez sé darle más importancia al cómo están contadas las cosas, además de lo que se cuenta en sí. Pero hay algo sin lo que no puedo pasar, y es la sensación de que exista un fondo real en la historia y en los personajes. Da igual que sea ficción pura y me conste que todo es invención: si el autor no es capaz de convencerme de que me habla de alguien de carne y hueso (o metal o pseudópodos, tanto da, pero que parezca real) a quien le ocurren cosas reales, y que reacciona a ellas de forma creíble, es poco probable que disfrute de la lectura por bien escrito que esté el relato. No es de extrañar que de esta forma prefiera con mucho la vuelta al mundo de Manuel Leguineche antes que la de Phileas Fogg, aunque Manu tardase 81 días y perdiese la apuesta…Por supuesto, no siempre, pero a menudo, es más sencillo hacer que suene convincente algo que ha pasado: basta con contar bien la historia y no hay que molestarse en inventarla. Charrière lo tenía fácil en ese aspecto, el argumento estaba escrito. Pero esto no quita mérito a una obra como Papillón, que resulta un modelo excelente de cómo describir lugares y personajes, narrar aventuras y tener al lector sujeto en un puño. La ventaja en atractivo que podría tener el `esto ocurrió realmente` es algo que se diluye con el tiempo, y la historia de un hombre castigado por un delito que no cometió y sus intentos de evasión del lugar donde está encerrado no era siquiera original cuando Charrière escribió su autobiografía.Pero lo cuenta tan bien que lo vives como si estuvieras ahí. Y eso es lo importante.

But what truly distinguishes Pariah from other worthwhile entries is its humor in the face of bleak and extremely disturbing events (the sociopathic jock, Eddie, for instance, enjoys fishing for zombies in a manner that will turn readers' stomachs). The lack of resolution is unsettling, but what could be resolved in a post-apocalyptic world overrun by the undead? Readers should shamble to the store for this one.

Though the book is nominally a legal thriller, the Dickensian atmospherics command as much notice as the plot. A complex case connecting a recent murder to one 20 years ago counterpoints Victor’s hospital visits to his dying father, who is obsessed with unburdening himself of (mostly sad) stories from his youth. It’s a tribute to Lashner’s skill that these yarns hold their own against the more dramatic main story line. Victor has been retained by petty wiseguy Joey Parma (known as Joey Cheaps) about an unsolved murder a generation ago. The victim was young lawyer Tommy Greeley, and Joey Cheaps was one of two perps, though he was never caught. When Joey is found near the waterfront with his throat slashed, Victor knows his duty. This involves considerable legwork and clashes with an array of sharply drawn characters; Lashner is in his element depicting this rogue’s gallery, and Victor riffs philosophically on his encounters. Foremost among the shady figures is a femme fatale (improbably but appropriately) named Alura Straczynski, who sets her sights on Victor. It’s a move more strategic than romantic, but no less dangerous for him. The standard cover-up by men in high places waits at the end of Victor’s odyssey, but this novel, like Lashner’s previous ones, is all about the journey. Lashner’s writing – or is it Victor's character? – gains depth and richness with every installment.
