Tačiau linčiuotojai nežino, kad ant šakos patemptas juodasis turi brolį – metisą, Li Andersoną, kurio odos spalvos ir veido bruožai labiau būdingi baltajai rasei. Nežino ir to, kad Li sukinėjasi netoliese ir brandina negailestingą kerštą.  Atpildo už nuodėmes priežastys ir atpildo pobūdis skaitytojui atskleidžiami ne iš karto. Iš pradžių romanas lyg seka Fitzgeraldo mėgtais „džiaziniais“ vakarėliais, kuriuose daugiau alkoholio, ištvirkavimų, kitokių linksmybių, nei prasmės, tačiau palaipsniui Viano pasakojimo atmosfera tirštėja, ir imi suvokti, kad tose linksmybėse slypi negailestingų užmačių tinklas, kurį užmetė ir lėtai traukia Li Andersonas…   Visų Li plano niuansų atskleisti nesinori, nes atimčiau nemažą dalį skaitymo malonumo ir neliktų intrigos, tačiau plonytė, vos kelių valandų pareikalaujanti knygutė prikausto iki paskutiniojo puslapio ir net užvertus knygą dar lieka gulėti galvoje, kaip sunkus slegiantis akmuo.
