Iki šios dienos pabaigos trejeto jaunų žmonių likimas pasikeis visam laikui. Robis ir Sesilija peržengs ribą, kurios egzistavimo iki tol jie nė neįsivaizdavo, ir taps daug jaunesnės mergaitės vaizduotės aukomis. Tuomet keistokas sesers poelgis ir netikėta gerai pažįstamo vaikino reakcija pro langą stebinčiai Brioni pasirodė tarsi nesuvokiama misterija, o to nesuvokimo padarinys — trylikametės nusikaltimas, kurį atpirkti ji mėgins visą savo likusį gyvenimą.

Il fait d’abord son devoir, se pique au jeu, s’intéresse à son fils, éprouve bientôt une tendresse dévorante et se consacre totalement à lui, non sans hargne, sans jalousie, sans difficultés de toutes sortes. C’est un vrai pélican. Mais ce n’est pas un saint : il emploie constamment des moyens « impurs » et, tout en se sacrifiant, il sacrifie allègrement une femme qu’il aimait, ses autres enfants, sans compter ses intérêts, sa fin de vie, son bonheur même.On remarquera que ce thème de la paternité n’a été que rarement traité dans le roman français (Balzac, bien sûr… Encore que Le père Goriot soit surtout l’histoire d’un vieillard dépouillé par ses filles.) Que cette lacune soit comblée par le romancier de Vipère au poing, c’est-à-dire de la haine filiale, cela peut étonner mais cela est logique : Hervé Bazin est le romancier des difficultés de la famille, toute son œuvre en témoigne. Disons que le temps a fait aussi son œuvre, et que, si l’auteur n’est point ici acteur comme naguère, il a connu depuis, auprès de ses propres enfants, les sentiments qui font de ce livre le chant d’amour d’un père.Ceci dit (pour reprendre une citation d’Emile Henriot) « il écrit toujours de la même encre empoisonnée, de la même plume furieuse, n'ayant pas encore désarmé et cependant c'est un homme en train de se transformer que nous retrouvons… »

La pratique professionnelle du piano suppose une discipline stricte. Elle exclut tout divertissement susceptible d'éloigner l'artiste de son clavier. Pourtant il aimerait, lui aussi, jouir de la lumière du monde, de la douceur de vivre, de la tiédeur de l'air et de l'amour des femmes. Eh bien non! Mort ou vif, le pianiste se doit d'abord à son public.Dans les allées du parc Monceau à Paris, Max a peur. «Max va mourir violemment dans vingt-deux jours mais, comme il l’ignore, ce n’est pas de cela qu’il a peur». Il a peur de son piano, peur de lui-même, surtout. Mais n’a-t-il pas raison puisqu’un soir, après un concert de gala, il est agressé et meurt au coin d’une rue? Fin de la première partie.On range le piano. On arrête l’alcool. On bascule, dans une clinique bizarre, le Centre, une version moderne du purgatoire qui recycle «des personnalités pour faire partie du personnel». Max fera partie du personnel, aux côtés de Dean Martin et de Doris Day. Il attend son verdict, le Parc (paradis) ou la Section urbaine (enfer). On tranche pour la Section urbaine et Max revient sur terre, avec l'interdiction formelle de retrouver quiconque a fait partie de son passé.Troisième volet, il y aura l’Amérique du Sud. Mais Max cherche désespérément sa Rose, une femme à qui il n'a jamais avoué son amour et qu'il a perdu de vue depuis ses années d'étude.Jouant avec l'éternité et le salut, Jean Echenoz nous prend à témoin, nous précisant avec humour que c’est une fiction qu'il invente pour nous. Je vous laisse le plaisir de découvrir le dénouement fantastique de cette parodie loufoque jusqu’à l’absurde, où il est question de partir vers l’obscur objet de son désir. C'est en tout cas un magnifique roman sur la peur de vivre.Jean Echenoz a reçu en 2006 le Grand Prix de littérature Paul Morand pour l'ensemble de son oeuvre.
