Houellebecq a découvert Lovecraft à l'âge de seize ans. C'est pour lui une révélation, à tel point qu'il se demande encore s'il s'agit réellement de littérature. L'univers de Lovecraft refuse le réalisme; la vérité est ailleurs, elle est dans le rêve… quand bien même ce rêve se transforme en cauchemar. La mythologie créée par Lovecraft est précisement la transcription de ces "rêves": la vision d'un monde souterrain hostile, peuplé d'entités monstrueuses antérieures à la race humaine. La force de cette vision tient à la précision matérialiste des descriptions. Les Grands Anciens dans Les Montagnes hallucinées sont décrits quasiment sur le ton du compte rendu de dissection: " Des angles intérieurs de la tête partent cinq tubes rougeâtres, terminés par des renflements de même couleur; ceux-ci, lorsqu'on appuie dessus, s'ouvrent sur des orifices en forme de cloche (…) qui doivent représenter des bouches." Houellebecq, pour percer le mystère d'une telle inspiration, a cherché dans la vie de l'auteur des débuts d'explication. On découvre un homme aristocratique, misanthrope et raciste qui ne cache pas son dégoût pour le monde moderne. D'ascendance anglo-saxonne, son séjour à New-York où, devenu chômeur, il tombe au même rang que les immigrés "italo-sémito-mongoloïdes", va exacerber sa haine de l'étranger. De retour dans sa région natale, Providence, cette haine servira de moteur à la création de ses grands textes. Alors faut-il brûler Lovecraft? Hier entstand ihr erster Krimmalroman Das fehlende Glied in der Kette. Eine beträchtliche Menge Arsen war aus dem Giftschrank verschwunden - und die junge Agatha spann den Fall aus. Sie fand das unverwechselbare Christie-Krimi-Ambiente. Gleich in ihrem ersten Werk taucht auch der belgische Detektiv mit den berühmten »kleinen grauen Zellen« auf: Hercule Poirot, der ebenso unsterblich werden sollte wie sein weibliches Pendant, die reizend altjüngferliche, jedoch scharf kombinierende Miss Marple (Mord im Pfarrhaus).Im Lauf ihres Lebens schrieb die »Queen of Crime« 67 Kriminalromane, unzählige Kurzgeschichten, 7 Theaterstücke (darunter Die Mausefalle) und ihre Autobiographie. 1956 wurde Agatha Christie mit dem »Order of the British Empire« ausgezeichnet und damit zur »Dame Agatha«.
