Egmont ist ein Trauerspiel von Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Es wurde 1775 begonnen und war 1788 im Druck.Egmont spielt in der Stadt Brüssel während des Aufstands der Niederländer gegen die spanische Herrschaft. Teile des niederländischen Adels verbünden sich mit den Protestanten, um die religiöse und politische Unterdrückung durch die Spanier zu beenden. Die Person des „Helden“ Egmont entstand nach dem Vorbild des tatsächlichen Lamoral Graf von Egmond, auf den Goethe bei seinen Studien über die Geschichte der Niederlande stieß. Der literarische Egmont hat mit seinem historischen Vorbild allerdings nur wenig gemeinsam.

Part Two shows Faust’s experience in the world of public affairs, including his encounter with Helen of Troy, the emblem of classical beauty and culture. The whole is a symbolic and panoramic commentary on the human condition and on modern European history and civilisation.

Sea: A group of people gathered in a kind of limbo, on a ship, disappearing into something unknown.

In this drama Ibsen has touched issues that were severely sensitive. The characters drawn in detail are deeply embedded in the plot.
