Den Hintergrund des Geschehens bildet das harte, abenteuerliche Leben der Trapper und Goldgräber in Alaska.Der AutorJack London (eig. John Griffith, später J. G. London nach seinem Stiefvater) wurde am 12.01.1876 in San Francisco geboren und wuchs in ärmlichen Verhältnissen auf. Er schlägt sich als Fabrikarbeiter, Austernpirat, Landstreicher und Seemann durch, holt das Abitur nach, beginnt zu studieren, geht dann als Goldsucher nach Alaska, lebt monatelang im Elendsviertel von London, gerät als Korrespondent im russisch-japanischen Krieg in Gefangenschaft und bereist die ganze Welt. Am 22.11.1916 setzt der berühmte Schriftsteller auf seiner Farm in Kalifornien seinem zuletzt von Alkohol, Erfolg und Extravaganz geprägten Leben ein Ende. - London hat hervorragende Tiergeschichten verfaßt, Kurzgeschichten, naturalistisch-romantische Abenteuerromane und sozialkritische Romane, denen zumeist eigene Erlebnisse zugrunde liegen.

Levo Tolstojaus „Ana Karenina“ buvo spausdinama Rusijos laikraštyje „Russky Vestnik“ 1875-1877 m. Deja, ruošiant spausdinti paskutiniąją dalį, redaktorius ir autorius susipyko dėl skirtingų požiūrių į politiką. Po metų rašytojas išleido knygą. Nuo 1878 m. šis literatūros šedevras buvo daugybę kartų perkeltas į kino ir TV ekranus, buvo skaitomas per radiją, pagal jį statomi baleto spektakliai. Neseniai vykusioje dabarties rašytojų apklausoje, „Ana Karenina“ buvo paskelbta visų laikų geriausia knyga . 2007 m. tyrinėtojas J.Peder Zane apklausė 125 geriausiai žinomus britų ir amerikiečių rašytojus, kurių prašė surašyti po 10 geriausių grožinės literatūros kūrinių. Susumavus rezultatus, sąrašo vršūnėje atsidūrė L.Tolstojaus „Ana Karenina“.

Pradėti rašyti „Aną Kareniną“ L.Tolstojų įkvėpė poetas Aleksandras Puškinas. 1873 m. kovo mėn. rašytojas perskaitė A.Puškino knygos pirmą eilutę: „Svečiai ruošėsi išvykti į sodybą“, - žmonai pasakė L.Tolstojus. „Taip turi būti rašoma! Bet kuris kitas pradėtų apibūdinti svečius, kambarius, bet jis iškart pradeda nuo veiksmo“. Tą naktį buvo pradėta rašyti „Ana Karenina“. Ana Karenina yra paremta tikra istorija. Ana Stepanovna Pirogova buvo vieno L.Tolstojaus draugo meilužė. Sužinojusi, kad jos mylimas vyras užmezgė romaną su vaikų aukle, moteris pabėgo ir kelias dienas klaidžiojo po apylinkes. Vėliau ji metėsi po traukiniu ir nusižudė. L.Tolstojų šis įvykis labai sukrėtė. Levino personažą rašytojas kūrė remdamasis savimi. Manoma, kad Levinas yra paties L.Tolstojaus prototipas. Kad tai yra daugiau ar mažiau autobiografinis personažas, sutinka nemažai literatūros kritikų. Net Tolstojaus žmona yra kartą jam pasakiusi: „Levinas – tai tu, tik be talento“.
