Asphodel
Doolittle Hilda
fb2
"DESTROY," H.D. had pencilled across the title page of this autobiographical novel. Although the manuscript survived, it has remained unpublished since its completion in the 1920s. Regarded by many as one of the major poets of the modernist period, H.D. created in Asphodel a remarkable and readable experimental prose text, which in its manipulation of technique and voice can stand with the works of Joyce, Woolf, and Stein; in its frank exploration of lesbian desire, pregnancy and motherhood, artistic independence for women, and female experience during wartime, H.D.'s novel stands alone.A sequel to the author's HERmione, Asphodel takes the reader into the bohemian drawing rooms of pre-World War I London and Paris, a milieu populated by such thinly disguised versions of Ezra Pound, Richard Aldington, May Sinclair, Brigit Patmore, and Margaret Cravens; on the other side of what H.D. calls "the chasm," the novel documents the war's devastating effect on the men and women who considered themselves guardians of beauty. Against this riven backdrop, Asphodel plays out the story of Hermione Gart, a young American newly arrived in Europe and testing for the first time the limits of her sexual and artistic identities. Following Hermione through the frustrations of a literary world dominated by men, the failures of an attempted lesbian relationship and a marriage riddled with infidelity, the birth of an illegitimate child, and, finally, happiness with a female companion, Asphodel describes with moving lyricism and striking candor the emergence of a young and gifted woman from her self-exile.Editor Robert Spoo's introduction carefully places Asphodel in the context of H.D.'s life and work. In an appendix featuring capsule biographies of the real figures behind the novel's fictional characters, Spoo provides keys to this roman à clef.

Kavan Anna
fb2
This collection of stories, mostly interlinked and largely autobiographical, chart the descent of the narrator from the onset of neurosis to final incarceration in a Swiss clinic. The sense of paranoia, of persecution by a foe or force that is never given a name, evokes The Trial by Kafka, a writer with whom Kavan is often compared, although her deeply personal, restrained, and almost foreign —accented style has no true model. The same characters who recur throughout — the protagonist's unhelpful "adviser," the friend and lover who abandons her at the clinic, and an assortment of deluded companions — are sketched without a trace of the rage, self-pity, or sentiment that have marked more recent accounts of mental instability.

Atjautīgais idalgo Lamančas Dons Kihots
de Servantess Saavedra Migels
fb2
Powys John Cowper
fb2
Published in 1954, John Cowper Powys called this novel, a 'long romance about Odysseus in his extreme old age, hoisting sail once more from Ithaca'.As usual there is a large cast of human characters but Powys also gives life and speech to inanimates such as a stone pillar, a wooden club, and an olive shoot. The descent to the drowned world of Atlantis towards the end of the novel is memorably described, indeed, Powys himself called it 'the best part of the book'.Many of Powys's themes, such as the benefits of matriarchy, the wickedness of priests and the evils of modern science which condones vivisection are given full rein in this odd but compelling work.
Atlas Shrugged
Rand Ayn
fb2
Rand's most notable novel asks the question: What happens to the world when the prime movers [inventors and scientists] go on strike? Narrator Scott Brick takes listeners on a journey so extraordinary they'll hardly notice the book's length. While his performance offers little in the way of theatrics, Brick is capable of garnering sympathy and, perhaps most importantly, devout attention for Rand's plot and characters. On the surface, Brick's voice is a cool, unrelenting force determined to capture every facet of Rand's complex story. But amid his calm and collected delivery, he taps into a more colorful emotional palette that will keep listeners involved. Brick's subtle delivery holds far more than meets the ear.

Daži fakti, smelti no grāmatām: N. M. Jadrincevs «Krievu obščina cietumā un trimdā» (1872), D. A. Liņevs «Pa etapu» (1886), L. Meļšins «Izstumto pasaulē» (1896) u. c., tika izmantoti romānā. Tolstojs uzklausīja juristu padomus un norādījumus. Kāds jurists palīdzēja viņam uzrakstīt apsūdzības slēdzienu, tiesas spriedumu un tiesu medicīnas ekspertīzes aktu.Daudzu romāna personāžu prototipi ir reālas personas. Tā, fllģeladjutanta Bogatirjova personā attēlots galvenās cara mītnes komandieris grāfs A. V. Olsufjevs. Toporova prototips ir kāds no 80. gadu politiskās reakcijas pārstāvjiem, sinodes virsprokurors J. N. Pobedonoscevs; grāfa Carska — galējais reakcionārs grāfs Pjotrs Andrejevičs Šuvalovs. Mariette’s vīra Cervjanska prototips ir žandarmu korpusa komandieris un iekšlietu ministra biedrs P. V. Orževskis.S. A. Tolstoja 1899. g. 22. februāra vēstulē rakstīja: «Cik apbrīnojami apzinīgi viņš strādā. Green Henry

One-legged Charley Summers is finally home from the war, after several years in a German prison camp, only to find he must now deal with the death of his lover Rose. A shell-shocked romantic — slow, distant, and dreamy — he begins to have trouble telling Rose's half-sister Nancy apart from Rose herself, now buried in the village churchyard. Coping and failing to cope with the quiet realities of daily life, Charley's delusions elevate his timid courtship of a practical and unremarkable young woman into an amnesiac love story both comic and disturbing. A contemporary of Anthony Powell and Evelyn Waugh, Henry Green was one of the greatest English novelists of the twentieth century, and Back is his most haunting and personal work.
