Lutera uzstāšanās pret katolisko Romu bija kā zibens spēriens pulvera mucā. Sakustējās visa Vācija. Neskaitāmajiem pārmērīgi lielajiem nodokļiem apspiestie vācu zemnieki cēlās cīņai pret saviem laicīgajiem un garīgajiem kungiem. Reformācija un Zemnieku karš Vācijā, pēc Engelsa domām, izvērtās par pirmo, kaut arī neveiksmīgo buržuāziskās revolūcijas mēģinājumu Eiropā. Izšķirošo pasākumu sagatavošanā sevišķi nozīmīga loma bija Tomasam Minceram. Viņš aicināja iznīcināt apspiedējus un nodibināt tautas varu. Grāmatas autors A. Šteklijs dzimis Maskavā 1924. gadā. Beidzis vēstures fakultāti un aspirantūru Maskavas Valsts universitātē. Publicējis virkni rakstu un apcerējumu par viduslaiku vēsturi. Krievu valodā tulkojis H. Ilbergas grāmatu «Klāra Cetkina» (1958) un uzrakstījis itāļu izcilā brīvdomātāja — populārās sociālās utopijas «Saules pilsēta» autora Tomazo Kampanellas biogrāfiju (krievu valodā divi izdevumi — 1959. un 1960. g.).
