Šī grāmata ir stāsts par manu bērnību. Tās lappusēs es esmu aprakstījis iespaidus un notikumus, kas palī­dzējuši man kļūt tādam, kāds esmu.

Taču es nepavisam nevēlējos pastāstīt vienīgi, ko pārdzīvojis mazs zēns, kuram bija jāmācās staigāt ar kruķiem; es gribēju dot aizritējušo gadu atspoguļo­jumu. Šeit aprakstītie cilvēki ir veidojušies tajos gados un pieder pagātnei tāpat kā tas laiks. Apstākļus, kas darīja viņus pašpaļāvīgus, godīgus un atsaucīgus, ir nomainījuši citi apstākļi, kuri spēj veidot tikpat spēcigus raksturus, taču vide ir izmainījusies un rezultāti ir citi.

Lai dotu patiesu tā laika dzīves gleznu, es neesmu vienmēr cieši turējies pie faktiem. Dažreiz esmu sa­grozījis notikumus, apvienojis raksturus, ja tas bija nepieciešams; stāsta vienotības labad esmu mainījis no­tikumu secību un ievedis dialogus, kas varbūt liksies neparasti ļaudīm, kuri dzīvojuši tādu pašu dzīvi kā es laikā, kad mašīnas vēl nebija aizstājušas zirgus.

No viņiem es izlūdzos piedošanu. Šāda veida grāma­tai nepieciešama īpaša pieeja, un ar laktiem vien daž­kārt nepietiek. Vienīgi ar iztēles palīdzību iespējams atklāt patiesību, un tas ir šīs grāmatas mērķis.
