Bass zde na pozadí cirkusu sleduje tři generace cirkusáků. Ústřední postavou je Vašek Karas, syn šumavského zedníka, který odejde k cirkusu, nakonec se ožení s dcerou ředitele a sám se později stane ředitelem cirkusu, předtím však vystřídá mnoho různých profesí u cirkusu.

Byť byl napsán již v roce 1930, vyšel román Eduarda Basse (1888-1946) "Cirkus Humberto" až v letech okupace. Většina čtenářů jej chápala jako morální povzbuzení v těžké době války, vždyť příběh několika generací cirkusových umělců ukazoval nezdolnost a pracovitost českých umělců, akrobatů i tenťáků. Bass zde popisuje nejslavnější období kočovných cirkusů i jejich pád na začátku dvacátého století. Příběh cirkusu začínáme sledovat s příchodem zedníka Antonína Karase, jehož nouze o práci přivede k cirkusu.
