Polowanie na muchy i inne opowiadania
Głowacki Janusz
fb2

Pond: Stories
Bennett Claire-Louise
fb2
How much should you let in and how much should you give away?Feverish and forthright, Pond is an absorbing chronicle of a solitudinous life told by an unnamed woman living on the cusp of a coastal town. The physical world depicted in these stories is unsettling yet intimately familiar and soon takes on a life of its own. Captivated by the stellar charms of seclusion but restless with desire, the woman’s relationship with her surroundings becomes boundless and increasingly bewildering. Claire-Louise Bennett’s startlingly original first collection is by turns darkly funny and deeply moving.
Poor Things
Gray Alasdair
fb2
One of Alasdair Gray's most brilliant creations, Poor Things is a postmodern revision of Frankenstein that replaces the traditional monster with Bella Baxter-a beautiful young erotomaniac brought back to life with the brain of an infant. Godwin Baxter's scientific ambition to create the perfect companion is realized when he finds the drowned body of Bella, but his dream is thwarted by Dr. Archibald McCandless's jealous love for Baxter's creation. The hilarious tale of love and scandal that ensues would be "the whole story" in the hands of a lesser author (which in fact it is, for this account is actually written by Dr. McCandless). For Gray, though, this is only half the story, after which Bella (a.k.a. Victoria McCandless) has her own say in the matter. Satirizing the classic Victorian novel, Poor Things is a hilarious political allegory and a thought-provoking duel between the desires of men and the independence of women, from one of Scotland's most accomplished author.

Pornografia
Gombrowicz Witold
fb2
(Jan Jakub Kolski)

Portnoy's Complaint
Roth Philip

“Touching as well as hilariously lewd . . . Roth is vibrantly talented . . . as marvelous a mimic and fantasist as has been produced by the most verbal group in human history.” Alfred Kazin, New York Review of Books“Deliciously funny . . . absurd and exuberant, wild and uproarious . . . a brilliantly vivid reading experience.” The New York Times Book Review“Roth is the bravest writer in the United States. He’s morally brave, he's politically brave. And Portnoy is part of that bravery.” Cynthia Ozick, Newsday“Simply one of the two or three funniest works in American fiction.” Chicago Sun-TimesPortnoy’s Complaint, a long monologue narrated by a young Jewish man while in analysis, is prefaced by a definition of “Portnoy’s Complaint” as a disorder in which “strongly felt ethical and altruistic impulses are perpetually warring with extreme sexual longings, often of a perverse nature.” The book focuses on Portnoy’s parents, his endless adolescent experimentation with masturbation, his youthful sexual encounters with girls, his varied sexual experiences with a model named Monkey, and his pilgrimage to Israel—all of which are punctuated by frequently obscene outcries against the guilt he feels for his sexual obsessions. Roth, who has defended himself and the book many times, claims it is full of dirty words because Portnoy wants to be free: “I wanted to raise obscenity to the level of a subject.”The book became a cause célèbre in 1969, commented on by social critics and stand-up comedians alike. Most objections to it came from Jewish groups and rabbis who called it “anti-Semitic” and “self-hating” and protested against libraries that put it on their shelves. It was seized in Australia in 1970 and 1971 by Melbourne officials, who filed obscenity charges against it and the bookseller who sold it.

Bukowski Charles
fb2
“It began as a mistake.” By middle age, Henry Chinaski has lost more than twelve years of his life to the U.S. Postal Service. In a world where his three true, bitter pleasures are women, booze, and racetrack betting, he somehow drags his hangover out of bed every dawn to lug waterlogged mailbags up mud-soaked mountains, outsmart vicious guard dogs, and pray to survive the day-to-day trials of sadistic bosses and certifiable coworkers. This classic 1971 novel—the one that catapulted its author to national fame—is the perfect introduction to the grimly hysterical world of legendary writer, poet, and Dirty Old Man Charles Bukowski and his fictional alter ego, Chinaski.About the AuthorCharles Bukowski is one of America’s best-known contemporary writers of poetry and prose, and, many would claim, its most influential and imitated poet. He was born in Andernach, Germany, and raised in Los Angeles, where he lived for fifty years. He published his first story in 1944, when he was twenty-four, and began writing poetry at the age of thirty-five. He died in San Pedro, California, on March 9, 1994, at the age of seventy-three, shortly after completing his last novel, Pulp.

Толькi вялiкi прыхiльнiк парадку — Леанарда да Вiнчы — пераконваў у адваротным. I ў якасцi доказу падам прыклад з юнацтва майго бацькi. Ён быў блiзкi да страты прытомнасцi i гiбелi ў цёмнай вадзе. Толькi ў апошнi момант узнiкла выратавальная здагадка — не супрацiўляцца моцнаму вiру, пайсцi на дно, а там адштурхнуцца ад цвёрдага i выплысцi на паветра.

Postcards from the Edge (Suzanne Vale[1])
Fisher Carrie
fb2
When we first meet the extraordinary young actress Suzanne Vale, she’s feeling like ‘something on the bottom of someone’s shoe, and not even someone interesting.’ Suzanne is in the harrowing and hilarious throes of drug rehabilitation, trying to understand what happened to her life and how she managed to land in a ‘drug hospital.’Just as Fisher’s first film role-the precocious teenager in Shampoo-echoed her own Beverly Hills upbringing, her first book is set within the world she knows better than anyone else: Hollywood. More of a fiction montage than a novel in the conventional sense, this stunning literary debut chronicles Suzanne’s vivid, excruciatingly funny experiences – from the clinic to her coming to terms with life in the outside world. Conversations with her psychiatrist ‘What worries me is, what if this guy is really the one for me and I haven’t had enough therapy to be comfortable with having found him?’; a high-concept, eighties-style affair ‘The only way to become intimate for me is repeated exposure. My route to intimacy is routine. I establish a pattern with somebody and then I notice when they’re not there?’Sparked by Suzanne’s and Carrie Fisher’s deliciously wry sense of the absurd, Postcards from the Edge is more than a book about stardom and drugs. It is a revealing look at the dangers – and delights – of all our addictions, from money and success to sex and insecurity.

Ihimaera Witi
fb2
This anniversary edition of Witi Ihimaera’s Pounamu Pounamu celebrates the 40th year in print of one of New Zealand’s most seminal works of fiction. When Pounamu Pounamu was published in 1972, it was a landmark occasion for New Zealand literature in many ways. It was the first work of fiction published by a Maori writer, it was the first collection of short stories that looked at contemporary Maori life and it launched the career of one of New Zealand’s best-known authors. The Pounamu Pounamu 40th Anniversary Edition is a beautiful hardback collector’s volume. It features a foreword by Dame Fiona Kidman and a commentary by Witi Ihimaera on each of the stories. In these author’s notes Witi looks back to events from his own childhood that inspired Pounamu Pounamu and the experience of writing and launching the book as a young man in the early ’70s.
