Matilda ist ein Wunderkind, verständig und blitzgescheit. Ihr Verstand ist so hell und scharf, daß er selbst den beschränktesten Eltern auffallen müßte. Aber Herr und Frau Wurmwald sind dermaßen unterbelichtet und oberflächlich, daß sie nicht imstande sind, das Außergewöhnliche an ihrer Tochter zu entdecken.
In der Schule geht es Matilda nicht besser. Sie langweilt sich und gilt als Nervensäge.
Für die Schmach in Schule und Elternhaus sinnt die kluge Kleine auf Rache. Sie entdeckt, daß sie übersinnliche Kräfte hat, und macht von ihnen Gebrauch. So siegt schließlich der Geist über Macht und Gewalt, die Liebe über List und Betrug, das Kind über die Erwachsenen.
Ein schönes Märchen – ein typischer Dahl: makaber und böse, witzig und phantasievoll.

Astrid Lindgren wurde 1907 im schwedischen Smaland geboren und starb 2002 im Alter von 94 Jahren in Stockholm. Zu den berühmtesten Büchern der »bekanntesten Kinderbuchautorin der Welt« (DIE ZEIT) gehören neben Pippi Langstrumpf die Geschichten über die Kinder aus Bullerbü, über Michel, Madita, Kalle Blomquist und Ronja Räubertochter.
